The degree of parents’ participation in teaching their children with mild intellectual disabilities in special education schools in the State of Kuwait

Abstract

         The current study aimed to know the degree of parents’ participation in teaching their children with mild intellectual disabilities in special education schools in the State of Kuwait. The study sample was selected using a purposive and facilitated method. The study sample consisted of 90 guardians of students with intellectual disabilities in the State of Kuwait for the academic year 2023/2024. To achieve the objectives of the study, the researcher built the tool and reliability and validity were obtained. The results showed that the overall average of parents’ participation in teaching their children with mild intellectual disabilities in special education schools in the State of Kuwait was (2.20), with a low degree, while the arithmetic averages for the items ranged between (1.54 and 2.58). The results also indicated the presence of significant differences. Statistical significance for the questionnaire on the participation of parents in teaching their children with mild intellectual disabilities in special education schools in the State of Kuwait, due to the variable of the gender of the guardian, and the differences were in favor of females. The results also indicated that there were statistically significant differences in determining the participation of parents in teaching their children with mild intellectual disabilities in special education schools in the State of Kuwait, due to the academic qualification variable (below bachelor’s and baccalaureate). The differences were in favor of (baccalaureate), with differences between the academic qualification (Without bachelor's and postgraduate studies), the differences were in favor of (postgraduate studies), and there were differences between the academic qualification (bachelor's and postgraduate studies) and the differences were in favor of (postgraduate studies). The study recommended identifying the obstacles to parents’ participation in teaching their children with mild intellectual disabilities in the State of Kuwait.
